Questions about the Chimnie MCP
What is MCP?
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI models use external tools. The Chimnie MCP server gives Claude, Codex, Cursor, ChatGPT and other AI agents four property tools, so they can look up any UK property in the middle of a conversation or a coding task.
Do I need to install anything?
No, Chimnie runs the server for you. Add the link with your API key to your agent and the tools appear straight away, and the dashboard has step-by-step instructions for each client. Open the setup page
Which clients does it work with?
Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, OpenCode and any other client that supports remote MCP servers. ChatGPT needs a Plus, Pro or Business plan with Developer mode turned on.
What data can an agent retrieve?
All 300+ data points per property, across physical attributes, construction, valuations and rebuild costs, energy and EPC, risks and surroundings, for 35M+ residential and commercial properties. The agent checks what is available for a property type and then requests what it needs, though availability does vary by property and dataset.
What does it cost?
Exactly the same as the API, so you pay as you go from £0.05 per residential record and £0.45 per commercial record with no subscription. Every tool response states the amount charged and your remaining balance, and new accounts start with up to £16 of free balance. See pricing
How does the agent keep spend under control?
Each lookup takes a list of fields, so the agent first checks which fields exist, which is free, and then asks only for the ones the question needs, paying the tier of what comes back. All tools are read-only, so an agent cannot top up, change or delete anything.
Is my API key safe in the link?
The key is how the connection is authenticated, so treat the link as a secret by keeping it out of shared configs and repositories, and rotate the key from the dashboard home page if it ever leaks.
Can it produce property reports?
Yes, ask for a PDF and the tool returns a full property report as a file, and agents can also ask for a property as a readable summary rather than raw data.
Can I use the API in my own agent instead?
Yes, developers can use the Chimnie API directly when they want full control over how property data enters their application, while MCP gives them a ready-made set of tools over the same data. Read the API docs
